I want to get nice misty seas and waterfall effects but I guess what filter you go for has a lot to go with time of day, available light and what you want to get out of the shot?

That's pretty much my take on it Dave. As I learn more about this craft I'll share my experience in this thread as it happens.

By the way I have just been looking at sample images from the 11-16 f2.8 you have and I am really impressed. For the money it seems a no-brainer to me.

I am going to NYC in May and it will be great to have a super wide lens that still maintains a f2.8 aperture. I can feel a purchase coming on!

The only downside is the filter thread is 77mm where all my current filters are 67mm. Could get expensive!

I've also learned that I really need a ND grad too, but there is no way to connect it in front of the screw in filter. I read on a fellow photographers site that waving a ND in front of the top part of the lens can solve this issue.

Jimmy. that method can be quite haphazard and as someone who has experimented with a similar technique I urge you to avoid this.

It really is in your interest to buy a decent set of grads. Do go for Lee filters. Avoid Cokin at all costs.

When you use a grad on the front of your lens and get it right "in camera" your confidence in image taking will soar!!!
