Is there a reason why some categories have more shortlisted images than others? Surely it would have been better (and fairer) to select a set number from each of the ten categories?

Well done to one and all, but I have to say that the standard of shortlisted images is far lower then last year.

The this is England category just seems to be a bunch of images of kids getting blotto. Obviously there are some cracking images, but nothing like last year at all.

I also agree that each category should have had an equal number.

I have to say I disagree Jansolo... the this is britain category is not all kids getting blotto. I count a few photos of alchohol involved only, have you seen the others???? You need to click for the different pages to see other entries.

oh nice one ,Iannawa! It sure is sour grapes and very nasty of you to call other's work " crap" What you dont understand is that the judges have a trained eye, they look for things we don't and most of the shots shortlisted have either strong narrative, excellent technical skills, composition etc or they are striking in some other way. The fact that you dont recognise that in the shots explains your own photographic methods and perhaps why you did not get shortlisted? Btw, i never got shortlisted either but I am not sulking!

I did not get selected either, but as always realise the subjectiveness in competition choices. The judges may not have chosen all the shortlisted pictures if they were part of the shortlisting process; simply as we are all bias to personal likes etc., and what grabs one may disgust another (and in away I do not think some of the selected pictures reflect the very best in the categories).

Having said that, there are a lot of fantastic shots in the short list (including ones I had missed seeing) and the quality of work throughout the competition is very high.

Good luck to all

I have seen the others as well. As said, there are cracking images in there, I just think the over all standard isn't as good as last year.

I don't want to cause offence, as beauxreflets says, it is all subjective. I just compare the two years and last year had such quality all the way through.

Persoanlly I was happy to have a hi-res submitted, and I still wish all and sundry very good luck!

Well done to all those on the shortlist - just think, you only have to wait another two months to know if you are 'the one' !! That would drive me crazy.
As for the initial selection, the professional judges with trained eyes have not seen (as far as I am aware) the shortlisted images yet. They are involved in the final selection only, not the initial selection (if anyone wants the list of initial judges and those judging the final selections, PM me).

Just a point on some of the images: the rules suggest that no manipulation should be applied to all but the Digital Vision category, where anything goes. I have spotted a few (in fashion, for example) where clearly digital manipulation has been used. So why have rules? Also, once again the reader's vote counted for nothing! So why bother with what the readers think (and vote for) in any case. I certainly am not suffering from sour grapes - my little Chard last night was perfectly drinkable!!!

Good afternoon to all !

I apologize for posting such a silly question, I'm feeling very stupid but ... I'm reading all of you discussing about the shortlisted pics but ... I cannot find them anywhere on the POTY 2009 website

Where are them ? Am I looking in the wrong place ? I suppose it should be as last year, ie by clicking the Categories you find the shorlisted but ... no way ! I click and I find only the "most recent", the "oldest" and the "readers choice"; nothing else. Even refreshing the page nothing change ...

Any suggestion ?

Thanks a lot,
diego

Hi again, ok, I found the link in the photoradar website and understood it is not present in the POTY2009 page. Strange...

What a big delusion ! I was sure to have been shortlisted because I received the request to upload a high resolution picture of my portfolio but... but my shot is not there ...
Anyother similar experience to any body else or only my sad case ?

Bye,
diego
