Old Books

Hi All

I took this last week while in Cornwall, some old books in the long gallery at Lanhydrock house, had to use natural light, National Trust no flash, hand held, ISO @ 3,200, shutter speed 1/25, F5.6.

I have warmed this up, but not too sure about it, I liked the graininess, I think it adds something.

What do you think.

Although I can't see a bigger version, I think the very high ISO has, in this case, given too much noise.... I take it you couldn't use a tripod either but that would have been ideal... with a long exposure. I often make record shots at a local gallery and, due to the horrible reflections (some from oil paint and some from glass) I cannot use any form of lighting - even the main room lights have to be off.... but exposures of up to three seconds work fine, medium aperture, ISO100, tripod, remote cable release.

Having said that, you've done well with the handholding at 1/25th.

I disagree Geoff, I think the image stands up really well without any noticeable image graining. The texture in the book covers look like the natural grain of the material rather than grain imposed by low light and a high iso. Using firefox it's possible to right click the image and choose "view image", which then opens an expanded view of the image, with the ability to expand even more as the cursor is now a "+" sign.

Anyway, here is the clickable image, have another look and see what you think:

Sorry - you're quite right..... it's texture rather than noise! Books like that make a great still life component.

Geoff

Thanks for the comments, unfortunately I did not have a tripod with me, so it was really the only option I had, you know I've looked a little deeper myself into this picture and I'm surprised myself, I'm sure there is some sensor noise in there some where, but far more than I thought.

Shot with a Canon 7D at 1/25 sec with Canon 15-85mm with IS, I think that's why I got away with no camera shake also.

Thanks for viewing.

Your welcome!

I guess you mean "I'm sure there is some sensor noise in there some where, but far less than I thought"

There are a so many NT sites similar to Lanhydrock house in North Cornwall to visit. I love the area having visited the county for summer hoildays since early childhood when my grandparents retired to Rock, in the late 1950's.

Hope the weather was kind to you and that we can look forward to viewing a few more of your excursions while staying in God's country.

Rick.

Yes. that's what I meant "less than I thought", typing fingers not keeping up with my thinking process.

Weather was fantastic and yes will post some of the other shots later this month, also spent some time down in West Sussex this week also, but to work next week.

Just uploading from my camera now, will take me some time to go through them all and review and tweak and they will need tweaking.

Cheers Steve
