Noise reduction on or off?

I'm using a Nikon d40x which is a bit old now. There has been a big improvements in camera and software since then. I have got the noise reduction option on all the time on my camera. Should i turn this off and do the noise reduction in ACR 6 or CS5, would this yield better results?

I may be wrong but I thought the Noise Reduction was for long exposures and, in any case, wouldn't affect Raw images.

I've just been doing some more searching on google. I think i might be the opposite Geoff. Long exposure noise reduction which i haven't got does effect raw files. Standard noise reduction only effects jpeg. I will turn it off thank you.

OK - I was looking at the details on the DPReview website - I couldn't quite see what the NR affected.
