Announced in April, and I'm sure it's a great lens, but a bit long for 'normal' use on DX cameras. I tried my 50mm AF for a trip around a National Trust property, and really only managed detail shots.

I also presumed a D3000; I really wonder whether a Sigma 70-300 APO will be good enough for the D3100 - or would the 55-200 (which is a cracking lens really) do just as well when cropped?

Chris
Shaun says he already has the 55-200.

Yes, and that's why I wonder if the Sigma 70-300 is really worth spending money on. Comments welcome!

I agree Chris, I don't think that there will be a great deal of extra reach and I believe that the Sigma is a little soft at the long end too.

Hi, I was reading in the Digital Camera mag there the other day something about the Nikon 18-200 VRII being a very good and exceptionally sharp lens at £580 but, if your looking for a slightly longer reach the next lens they rated second was the Sigma 18-250 OS HSM which cost £400....

Hope this helps...

Also, the reason that I chose this over the 50mm f1.8 that Jediboy refers to at £100 is that that lens will not autofocus on the D3100 as it has no internal motor.

Ooops! Sorry, my mistake.

Don't worry, I found that out by experience. My son has a D5000 and we bought hime that lens. He is mentally handicapped and hasn't got the grasp of manual focus so his shots with the 50mm are a little hit or miss. He's since had the 35mm f1.8 and this is a cracking lens. Only problem with it is the little sh@t won't let me borrow it.
