Crcked LCD lens

I've somehow managed to crack the LCD screen on my Canon 40D. Its obviously taken a large wallop sometime but I cannot remember when this could have happened.
The camera functions perfectly and I can see all the on screen menus and pictures. However there is an impact point in the top left hand corner and several carcks across the screen. There is a thick plastic screen protector over the surface, whether this is holding it in place or whether it is OK anyway I'm not quite sure. I never use live view.

My question is, how easy is it do get this repaired?; would it be the end of the world if I didn't get it repaired (funds are very tight at the moment)?; does anyone have any experiences of similar?

If I were you I'd get it repaired.

I recently had the misfortune of getting fruit juice into the main dial of my 500d, I took it into the Canon repair centre in Elstree (near Watford). I suspect that Canon will offer you a fixed price repair, give them a call on 0844 369 0100 to see how much they will charge. It sounds like the plastic cover of the screen has broken rather than the screen itself, I can't see that it would be a huge repair you may want to get a quote from these people I have used them in the past and they have been reasonable and great to deal with.

They repaired my A640 after I dropped it for about £30 and were able to get a brand new lens hood for my SX20IS after the dog consumed my last one (my local shop told me canon had discontinued them which was total cr*p considering the camera had only been released 4 months earlier).

Have you considered claiming it on your home insurance? A few years ago, my Nikon 18-55 kit lens broke on holiday. It was covered under personal possessions away from home, and they paid £195 for an £80 lens! Bought me a nice new lens.
