What compact should I get?

Hi All'

I need a bit of help please! I am looking to get a compact to take on holidays and travel. I currently use a Nikon DX2s which is too large to take on holidays. I am prepared to spend in the £400 to £500 region. I would use the camera for a wide range of photography styles which would include portraits of family and friends, landscapes, travel shots and possibly some low-light. I would like to have a bit of control over settings when required and would like a reasonable built-in flash. Is this asking too much...?

Canon G12 - I love my G10, although Nikon do similar models.

You can purchase wide angle and tele adapters for the Canon as well, so keeps everything light and portable.

You're not asking too much.
You can get either the Canon G12 or the Nikon P7000.
If you want a smaller camera with even better low-light support,
you can get either the Canon S95 or the Panasonic LX5.

You might consider either Canon G12 or Canon S95 both performs well and will satisfy your need till some extend.

I know this may sound like an odd choice.... but what about an Olympus Pen?

Mainly from a control point of view- Or maybe a Panasonic TZ series .

Doubt either of them stand much chance against the might of the G12 though

Just go to your local camera store and see what feels best ( the G series cameras are closer to a DSLR in terms of feel against say a TZ series)

Hope this isn't going off topic, perhaps you have had issue with the problem I faced this afternoon too.

Do any of the major manufacturers make a compact digital camera with an optical view finder?
It's for an elderly woman who wants to be able to see the image presented through a viewfinder rather than on a large LCD screen, which she finds hard to see in sunlight and uneasy with when trying to frame a shot.

She doesn't want a bridge camera as they are too big and bulky for her now. This afternoon I looked in Comet, Currys, Tesco electrical, Staples (getting desperate), Maplin (even more desperate!) and arrived at Jessops just after they closed.

Would definitely recommend the G series also. My G10 didn't feel like a "proper" camera to begin with but when i started using it on the long walks for which I had bought it I fell in love with it. So much so I am ashamed to say I have not used my DSLR in months. The big advantage is that it goes with me everywhere and I do not worry in quite the same way about it being stolen. The wide angle is excellent and the fact you can shoot RAW invaluable.
