iTunes?? to sync or not to sync??

Hi,

I have recently bought a new laptop and want to transfer the music from my iPhone into iTunes on the new laptop. I have googled this and one person said to sync it, another said not to as it will erase all of my music from my iphone.

Does anyone know how to do this??

Thanks

Chris

I have done this & lost everything & had to start again, instead of syncing off the phone to the laptop it synced from the laptop to the phone.

I daren't do it again incase the same thing happens as I have over 800 CDs on my iPod.

Having said that, I usually have to ask my daughter how to do stuff on iTunes, so I probably just did it wrong.

You need to go to preferences in Itunes and look for where it says devices, then turn off automatic synching. Do that before attaching your device and going to itunes. When you first start itunes with your phone or ipod attached click to backup, not sync. That will save all your files to the computer, in the future you can then sync as normal.

Thanks for your replies. Karen, it sounds like you know your way around iTunes. Unfortunately the 'backup' option does not appear. No idea why. Thanks again though, I'll keep trying.

To backup look at the left hand side of itunes, where it says devices, your phone or ipod should be displayed there when its attached. Just right click on your device and the option to backup should show itself. Make sure you have disabled auto synch before attaching your device and this should work.

Thanks Karen. I tried that and it was doing something but the music does still not appear in my iTunes library.
Thanks for your help though. Appreciate it.
