Photo editing and RAW advice

Hello all,

I have recently purchased my first DSLR (Nikon D90) and I'm wondering what software I need to edit my shots.

I intend to shoot predominantly in RAW as this apparently provides the best out of camera options and I've been thinking about buying Photoshop Elements 9 but I'm unsure if I need other software to get the RAW files off the camera? If so what do I need and what kind of price does it come in at?

Finally, I understand that when shooting in RAW it takes longer to store the image. Is there any settings you can use on the camera to speed this up?

Regards

BG

Welcome to the forums!

Elements 9 will do what you want. As far as actually getting the files from the camera, just copy them over RAW files are larger, since they contain more data, so they take longer to write to the memory card. Nothing you can do to speed that up.

You could use a really fast memory card which writes data faster, but to get the best you'd need to know the maximum write speed of your camera as there's no point in buying an expensive memory card which fabulous write speeds if your camera can't take advantage of it.

The write speed of your camera should be in your manual somewhere or Google it. Then see if your current memory card has the same write speed capacity.
