looks like a great lens to partner my 55-200mm with.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NIKON-AIS-Zoom...1#ht_500wt_922

Going to check out Sussex Camera Centre on Saturday - shame Mifsuds dont sell online like SRS Microsystems do.

You only have to give them a call and they deal with it very quick.

I'd pass that one by if I were you. Almost total overlap in focal length with your 55-200, similar max apertures, manual focus, probably no metering.

No, it's not manual focus but auto-focus, also the metering is through the lens so, won't be a problem.

Even if it were AF - which it isn't, no AI-S lens is, and it's even listed as MF on the eBay listing - I don't see it as a useful addition to a 55-200 AF-S lens. As an AI-S lens it has no CPU. I'm not inclined to look & see which digital bodies will meter with it.

Well I have the Nikon 400mm F2.8 AIS lens and it auto-focuses on both my D200 and D3.

Ideal for shooting flying pigs, no doubt.
Seriously, you've most likely got the AF-I or AF-S lens.

Am I better off getting the cheap 70-300mm http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/316...-6G-Lens-.html

Mifsuds do actually have the one that Oldboy posted earlier - the f2.8 one that Ken Rockwell recommended

No. It's not a good lens, especially in the 200-300 which your 55-200 doesn't cover. Youd probably get just as good a result from cropping shots taken with your 55-200. It's way overpriced - you can get this NEW for £85, which may tell you that Nikon made too many and people are (still) trying to get rid of them.

Marcus, I'm losing track of things. You say you can't afford the D5100 or D7000, yet you're looking at stuff like this to throw £100 at. Save your money. Look for good glass cheap, not cheap glass.

Chris

I'm thinking long term.... I actually used one today and is discovered its rubbish compared to my 55-200mm

Will save for the 70-300mm VR or maybe a 50mm prime
