Came across these guys today, and thought they would beautifully illustrate this subject!

Real old fashioned grime, on real old fashioned boilersuits! No computer read outs for these guys!

I spent the first twenty years of my working life as a Projection Technician at Cinemas all around South London and at Elstree Studios.

Does studying sound engineering count? If so add me to the list.

I'm not sure I can judge this. If you consider yourself an engineer, join the club, I would say.

I am, of course, not a member, even though I have called myself 'domestic engineer' in the past, when I thought 'housewife and mother' did not fully describe the work involved.

I can fix an older car, not sure about a current model. I used to help my dad replace brakes and various other parts all the time. I am also not a bad plumber due to helping him, and basic electrical (lost count on the number of light fixtures and ceiling fans). My father left school in grade 8 and had dozens of jobs before he joined the army and became military police. That was the 1950's. He tried to join for Korea, but they caught him being too young (my uncle meanwhile had joined the navy at 16 in WWII and eventually became one of the highest ranking ratings in the navy) so he joined later. He was with the UN in Cyprus and Egypt. He could do a lot of things (like install furnaces) that I have never learned to do.

I did plant a birch tree yesterday. I dig a mean hole

I think the old(er) generation was much more used to doing things themselves; the 'make do and mend' attitude was very much the 'normal' attitude till ... the seventies ... eighties?

Since I started as a volunteer ranger (in a country park) a couple of years ago, I've become much more adept at digging holes, mending and setting up fences and repairing benches. I must admit though that for really 'heavy' jobs, I rely on the men of the team.
In spite of decades of 'emancipation,' women still haven't got the strength of men. (Thank goodness!)

Engineer through and through, Instrument engineer at that, so I combine Electrical / Mechanical / Computer and Software into one mass and use it to solve the physical aspect of chemical process problems.

It used to facinate me, but as I've gotten older it's become as boring as .... hmm.. I can't think of anything as boring

That's probably why I escape into the realms of photography...

The down side to the 'engineer' part of my title is that my wife thinks I can build walls, lay drains, do woodwork, pipefitting, etc. The general phrase is 'Well you're an engineer aren't you....'

I wonder how many bored professional photographers would love to escape into the realms of engineering?

Hmmm... probably quite a few - it would be good if we could swap for a while but not sure my clients would agree or theirs
