Magazines are slow to acknowledge work that they might want to use. The last time I submitted work for publication, both magazines — Black and White Magazine and Amateur Photographer — took almost a year before they wrote and told me that my stuff was to be used. That's fine of course if you are an amateur like me, but if you are a pro, you would like to know sooner, so that you can move your stuff forward. I think the best attitude is to send the same work out to as many prospective magazines on a first-come-first-served basis and hope for the best.

Keith,

You could always remind the magazine in question about your submission, asking them to reply so that if they don't want them you can try other magazines - that has worked for me in the past

Most editors are just busy and need a bit of a prod!

I did that with Black and White Magazine, Amy, and didn't get a reply. Funnily enough, the first time I knew that my stuff had made their magazine was when ABBERS congratulated me here on the forums. I rushed out to buy the mag of course, only to find two days later via B&W Magazine, (along with a letter and a free copy of the mag too), that I had been successful. So much for rushing, eh?...

One never bothers editors that way as a rule, for fear of being rejected.

Hmmm... well if that's been your experience then fair enough - if I was to not get a reply after a certain length of time I'd just assume it was a "no" and pitch elsewhere.

I would never be annoyed at someone for reminding me about their submission though, maybe I'm too kind :P

Hi,

Do you need to be quite advanced in photography for your images to be chosen for hotshots, or can you be a beginner and still be selected?? ( as long as its a good photo obviously!)

Regards
Cate

Hi Cate,

A good photo is a good photo is a good photo... whether you're pro, advanced or only picked up the camera yesterday - send in your best and see what happens
