Similarly to OldBoy's suggestion above, I sit in the open front door with my camera tripoded (more comfortable that way, as much as anything else!). It's amazing how a little bit of food overcomes wildlife's natural shyness! Here's "my" Vole (they've been around for years but I always refer to whichever appears as "my" Mr Squeak - I'd guess "he" must be at least 2nd or 3rd generation from when I started).
