Forgot I have an 'O' level in metal work and made my own hacksaw once

And also I have broken lots of mechanical things and I have mended a lot of things broken by me or my daughter

Husband of a friend of mine has a similar background; managed a fishfarm in Scotland years ago; he's now teaching.

In the days I still was allowed to drive, I could hardly fill up the car. Thank goodness, in those days you still had serviced pumps and (especially young) ladies were not really expected to 'help themselves.' Dates me!

Don't think this counts Matt.

I didn't set up this thread to be the judge of what is, and what isn't 'proper' engineering. I suppose you (plural) know best.

It only struck me some days ago, that quite a few people mentioned they were engineers, and it made me wonder.

My father was a mechanical engineer and there wasn't a thing he couldn't repair, or improve. He was very popular with my (male) friends, most of them engineering students themselves, and all of them proud owners of, what now would be, vintage motorbikes. In those days they were simply old (often second world war) bikes; the only ones they could afford.

They (the bikes) needed constant tinkering, and our garden was always full of bits and pieces; the oilstains on the path brought my mother to despair. Yeah, my father was definitely more popular with them than I!

But I was the one on the pillion, when they finally worked again! Glorious days before helmets were compulsory; long blond hair blowing in the wind ...

Mmmm ... I didn't really mean to reveal part of my past, you have to be so careful these days, but it might explain why the word 'engineer' stuck in my memory.

I taught myself 'Word' but am not much of a typist.

I also lack any form of technical knowledge, as I never needed it. My poor dad even repaired our flat tyres! But ... I'm very proud to announce that my daughter, who spent time at a Dutch university, and of course used a bicycle all the time, can repair a tyre!

Tell me about it, my wifes car has been in 3 times with a misfiring issue but computer says there is nothing wrong and the EM light isn't on grrrrrr I did suggest they tried driving it around and see for themselves but was told they couldn't work out the fault unless it is plugged into the diagnostics when it does it.

Bring back old fashioned engineering is what I say.

Sorry off topic there.

My dad is a fully qualified mechanic he did an apprenticeship as a bus mechanic and then did a stint as an inspector with the Dept of Transport as an HGV inspector. He is now retired and does up old Devon General Buses in his spare time some of which he worked on in his apprenticeship. When I was a kid I desperately wanted to be a mechanic but my school wasn't geared up for it so had to do computer science instead hence my current career.

Interestingly he won't touch a modern car either even his goes to the garage these days.

Sounds like they trying to get a bit more money, my car was misfiring, and things, took out the plugs and 2 out of 4 were blown, took all of 20 mins, According to my grandad modern things arent build to be repaired just replaced... thats generally the attitude these days,
i wish i had done enginering or mechanics in stead of fishery management, lol

Having been a electro/electronic/mechanic for 40 years, now long since retired I can still put my hand to most things. Took up a bit of programming when I first retired but just love electronics. Heres a poser I found out by accident when programming. Excluding 1 what makes the number 81 unique. Answers on the back of A £10 note.

I've been a mechanic for 35 years.

I repair horticultural machinery for a living. Had ten years out when I repaired plant equipment, and went back to garden machinery on a self employed basis about 16 years ago. Still doing it now.

I dabble in computing, website building, and electronics, and even just yesterday had to rip the motherboard out of this PC to cure some major lockup problems. Robbed three capacitors from a old motherboard, and replaced the bulging ones on this one. Works as you can see, because I'm typing this post on it.
