and what's wrong with doing it because he wants to?

I find it strange that people seem to need other people to justify why they want new or different equipment. It's almost like unless you can justify why you want to upgrade, there is no reason why you should upgrade.

I'll suggest one really good reason why you might want to upgrade which in my book trumps all the reasons not to; because it will give you pleasure.

I have to agree. If he thinks he wants to, let him. Why even bother to ask?

Agree with you all, I feel you should upgrade when you realise its your kit holding you back sometimes, i think you might aswell do it, dont see a reason not to really, im upgrading to full frame, beacse i want to, i dont want to upgrade to a 50 or 7d, then a bit later want to get a full frame and have more cost, id rather make the leap from mine striaght to the big toys, rather than mess around, and ill agree with the pleasure, youll get endless hours of joy from it, and not having to worry if the quality will be okay, or if the camera can handle it,

There's nothing wrong with going full frame - and there's nothing wrong with buying a fast car and never getting it out of 2nd gear. Both may be enjoyed.

And there's nothing wrong with going onto a photographic website, asking a question and receiving all manner of answers. Some of those answers may directly answer the question, some may not - but they may all help in forming a direction to take. Usually this all happens without patronising side comments but occasionally it does - but such is forum life!

Well, I have been shooting FF for the past 5 years with first the 5d classic and now the 5dMKII. I can't stress enough that regardless of what people who have never used FF say, there is a noticeable difference in image quality that can only be experienced by using it. That isn't to say that crop sensors can't provide superb images because that would be a ridiculous lie if I said otherwise. FF isn't for everyone though. It has its pros and cons just like any other format. It all depends on what you will be shooting really, as any camera is only a tool, so choose one depending on what your main usage will be. The weight of the 5d MKII isn't much different to the 7d with grip, and my 5dMKII without grip and with the 24-105L is very manageable. Lenses need to be considered more carefully with FF because the size of the sensor will be very unforgiving with low budget lenses. There are a few downsides, but the image quality more than makes up for them.

Would I go back to using a crop camera? The answer to that is a resounding NO!

Update from DJT

Thanks everyone for your advice, this post has sat for 2 months with no replies and then a sudden flurry!! I thought long and hard about this decision and eventually decided to stay with my current Nikon D90 and to invest my money in some top lenses now and the D300 replacement when it appears. I have bought the Sigma 17 - 50 mm F 2.8 OS, DC, Ex, lens and the Nikon 70 - 300 mm f4.5-5.6 IF, ED. Both lenses have given me excellent results and have re-invigorated my photography. Ken Rockwell was a big influence on my decision.
