I use a lens pen. It was less than £3 from Jessops and works a treat on everything I've ever got on a lens

I contacted Sigma on Friday about using petrol, and they told me that up until it was banned they were using Carbon Tetrachloride (old thawpit) or dry cleaning fluid. They said that the lighter fluid should be fine. You need a liquid which doesn't evaporate so quickly it leaves smears, but also evaporates quickly enough to not leave the lens surface wet.

If you can get your hands on methanol thats the best fluid to use. A lot of sensor cleaning fluids are actually methanol because it's extremely volatile and, therefore, evaporates very quickly.

Just don't drink it...!
