Hi NaughtyDanny,

Great subject for a shoot!

I want to look at this picture and feel the speed but apart from the water hitting the car it might as well be parked.

I would also have liked the crop to be a lot wider although you might not have had the space for this.

I appreciate the difficulty in getting a shot like this though and I am not saying it is easy!

I agree its cropped too tight and the shutter speed could have been slower.

You did get a good postion though keep trying.

Danny,
I used to do a lot of commercial motorsport photography when I was young, it's a great subject to shoot, and here are my comments;
It's cropped too tightly, but shutter speed is good, gives some indication of movement and speed, shows some advertising but not the driver / navigator.
It looks like you're on the inside edge of the car which is good from a safety point of view, but being on the outside edge, getting the car coming into a bend will give a lot more dramatic impact and will be of more commercial value; be careful on the outside edge though, the car will naturally slide in that direction and weaker drivers can lose control with deadly results for photographers - use a long lens (200-300mm) and choose your spot wisely!
Try and be slightly above the car, capture the bonnet and driver / navigator.
Pre-focus on a point in the bend that you know the car will pass through (good drivers will follow the same line for handling and speed), it will save time for snapping.
Following the above should give you:
  • A greater coverage of the car (bonnet and side)
A view of the driver / navigator
    Action / Impact
Isolation of the car (because of the long lens)
    A greater succesful hit rate
Get the above right and the shots become quite marketable to magazines (motor sports), the drivers and navigators for personal use and obtaining sponsorship, and the sponsors for promotion and advertising.

Good Luck.

Phil

Phil has some sound advice about safety!

Look how close this was - but admire also the fact that the photographer still got the shot straighht afterwards. A true Pro!

Ouch, at least he had the good sense to be on the reverse side of the concrete wall! - I was in a similar incident (twice), but knowing the sport you can generally tell when the excitment is about to happen....
Once in the welsh hills I had positioned myself on an outside edge, amongst the trees and got some great shots for the first 5-6 cars. After that the gravel wasgiving in and the cars were sliding a bit so I decided to move across the track, out of the way but slightly higher. Next car rolled straight through where I had been positioned and ended up 10 yards further on.
Second time I was in a press box at Oulton Park on the inside of a hairpen bend when a car came over the hill, realised he had to slow quickly for the hairpin and lost it completely. Luckily the press boxes are on stilts and he went clean through the legs of it, the top (where I was) crashed down onto the back of his car. I was shaken (physically), bruised but otherwise unscathed.
