The D5000 is the next step up the Nikon ladder, after that it's the D90. I have a D90 and it's a great camera, I upgraded from the D80 last year.

As for tethered shooting I don't know if you can do that with the D3000, but if you can then I would think that Aperture 3 would be your best bet for a Mac.

If you have a good set of lenses then rather than the D90 look at the D300s. It's a semi-pro camera with full weather-proofing. It is another £400 plus, but might be a better option for you.

No, the D5100 is now. Personally, I'd recommend that over the D90. I always think you should get the newest technology you can with camera bodies.

Given that there was little difference between the D5000 and D90 (they had the same sensors, same autofocus systems, same processors, same metering systems), the D5100 is better specified than the D90 in most respects.

As for tethering, I'm fairly sure the D3000 doesn't do thethered shooting.

I don't know about Mac specific software but there are loads of free tethering programs for Nikon cameras on both Mac & PC systems. Just stick it into Google...

I've used 'sofortbild' to shoot tethered on a mac before. I don't know if the D3000 supports it (my old D70s did), but as its a free download, it won't cost you anything to give it a try.

It's a good pogram but it won't work - the D3000 doesn't do tethering at all.

Err, it's not as far as I am concerned! That is unless you really want to use it for video, which I don't. I bought a DSLR to take photos not video.

The D90 has -
Much larger viewfinder
Built in autofocus motor
Pentaprism viewfinder versus pentamirror (much brighter image)
Physically larger sensor
Less shutter lag
Longer battery life
Faster start-up
Faster continuous shooting
Cheaper
Better viewfinder coverage
Top mounted LCD screen

The D5100 has -
Higher video resolution
Video autofocus
Continuous video focus
External microphone socket
Flip out screen
Higher boosted ISO
Higher ISO
Higher resolution.
Lighter weight.

So from this the only thing that I can see might make me chose the D5100 over the D90 is the pixel count. But to be honest I am more than satisfied with the size of the pictures from the D90.
The increased ISO is in my mind a complete waste of time, if I need to use anything above 800 ISO then it's time for a tripod!

So on balance I would rather have the brighter, better viewfinder, the faster speed of start-up and shooting, and the longer battery life.

If you look at the numerous reviews of these two cameras you will see that the D90 wins hands down. The D90 is a prosumer, the D5100 is an amateur in my opinion.

I just upgraded by D3000 I'd recommend 1st setting out your budget and work back from that. As well as spending money on a body it's worth thinking about glass too. No point in buying a D700 and throwing on a 18-55 kit lens on it lol.

The lack of remote shooting on my D3000 was frustrating at time. Since upgrading, I've used this feature a lot.
