Thats defo not an upgrade. When i got my d5000 it came with that tamron lens i have now sold it and got the nikon 55-200 vr and i could not be happier. The tamron 70-300 was so bad i wouldn`t use it and when it says macro thats just a joke you can get nice closeup shots with the nikon just zoom to 200mm. The kit lens 18-55 does a good job closeup as well zoom to 55mm closest focus is 0.28m you soon learn where that is before i had my macro lens i love using the 18-55mm for closeup. If you want better magnification buy the raynox dcr250 £40 on amazon, search raynox on flickr for examples.

It is up to you what you do but from my experience you will not be happy with that tamron lens stick with the nikon 55-200vr btw they are selling the tamron lens for £120 so you could always get both and it will still cost the same doesnt make sense to me ;0

tethering and LR3

LR officially doesn't support my old Nikon D60 for tethering either, but by using 3rd party software to shoot in tethered mode I have been able to shoot tethered and have the image go directly into LR. The software sends the image to a folder on my computer which I set up as a "watched" folder in LR. Haven't done it in awhile, but it works. You should be able to do something like that with the D7000, no?

Matt - there are plenty of free, third party Nikon tethering programs. Have a look at this review of some
