No!!! ;-)

You don't copy just use their work as stepping stones to your own ideas. I looked at the work of John Coplan for my FMP in college but I never shot nudes, I used his look at the aging process of the older body to look at decay at abandoned hospitals. We used to look at people's work but had to form our own progression.

Real world? I don't think you can get more real than some of the street shots on display - that's the nature of the genre, some of them a little too uncomfortably real for some I would guess.

By that same token, do I take it you don't like to visit any exhibitions, read books or look at other people's photography for fear of copying?

I think we are all inspired by each other, and whether you do it consciously or not we are all copying from one thing or another, from our experiences, what we've been exposed to and what we take in on a daily basis will all go towards to inspiring your own work.

I agree with Amy, its hard not to be influenced even if you try not to be. Buying a photography magazine, watching a show on the tv about photography or even looking at photos in these forums will all ingrain themselves in your sub-conscious whether you want them to or not :-)

With regards to photography magazines, I brought them just for the reviews of equipment, not for techniques on how to take a photo etcetc. I remember most of the photos I've taken but not the date. Yes, I do looks at other peoples photos but I don't remember them in the way I remember mine. It is possible that sub-consciously they might have an effect on me and I can't rule that out, but by reducing my exposure to specific trends I reduce the impact it may have.
