My new 500 f4 on a............

...1D mk3 produces images that fill the screen on my adobe ACR at 67 %. Which means that I have practically no room to crop, should I need to. I have a 300 f2.8, which with a x2 converter still allows me a 30% odd image size on my screen with this camera. Conversely the 500 alone, or with a 1.4 converter gives a 26 % image with a 5D or 30% 'ish with a 7D.

Can anybody explain why the 1D gives such a large image with my 500 lens?

Why don't you just click on the size box at the bottom of ACR and choose the 'fit in view' option?

Question

Because it is already nearly at 100%. The point is that the image out of the camera is almost full size. So I have no leeway to make a crop, for example. The lens performs differently on my 1D when compared with the other 2 cameras. And when you shoot mainly wildlife, which has a horrible habit of sitting on the horizon, I for one need the ability to crop into my images. And what I can't understand is that this is the only lens which acts markedly differently on my various cameras.

I have other lenses where the image comes into ACR at around 30%. This leaves loads of cropping space. This is the main problem.

Imagine that your image as you see it on your screen is almost 100%. Resizing it will only allow me to make it smaller. Or risk becoming pixelated.

Yes, but, as I understand it, if you fit to view and then crop it you can still resize it to 100% after that and should still get a clear image. Why not give it a try and see what happens?

Use the Zoom Tool on your Tools Palette, this allows you to increase/decrease the size on screen. Use the crop tool to select which parts you want to crop, crop and then use to zoom tool to fill the screen with the cropped image.

I don't think it's the lens that's making the difference, it's the camera you are using it on.

The 1D mk3 is a 10MP camera, while the 7D and 5D are 18 and 21 MP respectively. This means the 1D's picture will fill the screen at a larger effective %age than the other 2.

Take a look at the resolution of the images each is producing.

Cheers, Sie

DOH! Found the problem. The raw setting had been changed to the small size, so the image taken was about half size. All is corrected now.

Brilliant lens however. But a bit heaavy.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I think that I knew what he was on about, just that I don't think that he was willing to try my response.
