Hi Bernice, just a quick word of advice, but wide angle lenses aren't great for close up portraits as the wider the lens the more perspective there will be. So if you take a shot of someone face with a wide angle lens, the image will show them having an enormous nose and tiny ears. With your cropped sensor camera, a 50mm lens should give you an actual focal length of around 80mm which is ideal for portraits. I think Canon do a 50mm f/1.8 II at under £100 that should be ideal or a 50mm f/2.5 Macro for about £225 - £250ish.
For weddings it's also useful to have a telephoto zoom. They start from about £220 but a really good one could set you back nearly £1000. Best start saving your pennies now!
