Unless you're morally against it, just use photoshop / image editing software. You've got way more control than with filter / lens / lighting effects

You could do Matt, though it takes 5 seconds to stick a gel on a strobe & might take you a lot longer sorting out in Photoshop afterwards. Depends which you find works for you.

the most common place for coloured gels would be a place that sells public address/disco lighting
thats where i would look if i wanted any it should be cheaper to get a piece rathyer than buying a dedicated item for a pacific strobe
after all the actual coloured gel will be the same

'Tis true - however if you get it wrong with the gel, you can't undo it. Applying this kind of effect on a RAW file is non-destructive. But as you say; it's all down to personal preference and how people like to shoot

Just a thought; How can you know if you have got it absolutely right with a PP applied effect, if you have not got a gel shot for comparison or guide upon a scene

As you say both methods have their merits depending upon what you wish to achieve in a shot.
