Why so many magazines?

As a beginner to photography i am keen to subscribe to a magazine. I have purchased various titles over the last few months and am now keen to settle on one.

As a mountain biker i am used to having a variety of differnet magazines available to me, however they tend to specialise in different techniques. With photography it seems to be that one publisher can specialise in technicques and then manufacturers or even a mixture of both.

For example, i was reading a thread on the beginners forum where someone suggested a very interesting course which looks suitable for me. I click on the link to find a publication which is plastered with pictures of Nikon (Looks to be sponsored). Anyhow, a bit of reading later i deem it to be not just based on Nikon but most brands so as a Canon user i feel ok with this. Then i see the subscription offer and think this looks good. Then i find the same publisher is doing two different publications. Neither seems to be brand specific or technique specific.

Why is there such duplication

The publications in question are Practical photography & Digital photo.

Apologies for putting this here if its the wrong place.

Regards

what also seems to happen is the same techniques are regurgitated quite quickly in different magazines

Well, those are from a rival publisher to the owner of PhotoRadar If you look at history that can exlain it. PP, has been around a long time and was of course film only. DP was started to focus on digital photography. PP had to start covering digital as film was dying. Both, I assume, have maintained enough sales to make it viable to produce both.

Now for something from Future Publications, Digital Camera is "generic" and PhotoPlus is Canon DSLR specific. DC, used to camera type (point and shoot, SLR, etc) generic, but has become more focused on DSLRs recently.

Since you are a Canon person, and if that is a DLSR, I would recommend PhotoPlus, I have been a subscriber since I got my camera and have learned a lot.

Digital Photo was based more on what to do after you'd taken the shots. I believe it used to be called Digital Photo FX originally, whereas Practical Photography was about how to take the shots (in a nutshell)
