Soft box or umbarella ?

I am doing a shoot, portrait, head and shoulders for a hair comp which do you think is the best for this type of shot , softbox or umberella ?

I think that it depends what kind of effect that you are looking for Mark. A softbox will give you more directional light than an umbrella which will spread the light a little further. Have a look at the Lastolite podcasts I mentioned in the other thread. They cover all of this type of lighting.

Agreed - also sometimes it comes down to convenience for where you are and what you're doing. I've certainly found using an umbrella easy to organise and quick to set up. But if you have the time, then you certainly have the choices.

Yes Drew, there are about 24 of them in the series so far and I have them all on my ipod. Sometimes I go on the train to Cardiff or Penarth for landscapes etc and watch them on the train. I must admit that I haven't used the knowledge a great deal as I don't have any willing models to shoot but, if things change, then I will cram a lot.
