Infared...

I have been looking at some of the photos taken in infared...and the infared filters/lenses

I have a Nikon D40...which filter/lens would be suitable

Many thanks

You'll need a tripod and an IR filter such as the Hoya R72. Expect long exposure times too. Success will largely depend on how efficient the 'hot' filter in the camera is (one that blocks IR light) so it may be more insensitive to IR than some other models. With the filter on the lens you won't see much through the viewfinder as it's nearly opaque.

If you have a remote control that operates with IR light you can get an idea how sensitive your camera is. In a dark room (preferably well after sunset) set the camera on a steady surface or tripod then operate and point the remote at the camera camera when the shutter is open. The longer the shutter time has to be before you see any kind of recorded IR trace the less IR sensitive the camera.
