I got accused of being a photo magazine editor

I was engaged in some professional sports photography today ( MK Dons -v- Tranmere Rovers) when a chap in the stands walked down to the pitch side & shouted over to me.

Him: "Excuse me, are you the editor of PhotoPlus"
Me: "Er, no"
Him: "Are you an editor of another magazine?"
Me: (actually I am but it's an online magazine that I'm sure he's never have heard of) "No."
Him: "Oh, you look like the editor of PhotoPlus."
Me: "No, sorry."

He returns to stands, I return to loading shots onto a laptop.

I wonder if that MK Dons fan is a member here.....

(I make no comment on whether Chris George or myself should feel more insulted!)

Good job you said no, as he may have wanted to thump you for some review you(Chris George) did.

Do you have the beard that is in your avatar pic? I have seen a picture of Chris with a moustache, I think, but not a beard. As OldBoy said, probably a good idea to say no, just in case

yes, in fact it's a little longer & shaggier at the moment as I haven't shaved for a few days.

I get that as well, I think people just equate a large camera with professional photography or a news paper photographer.

That is true. You see stories all over about people not being allowed to bring their "professional" camera into something where P&S' are allowed.

And yet some of these point and shoot cameras can produce some pretty good images!

Went recently to the 02 to see the Young Voices event only to find that before we had even got into the arena there were banners highlighing that no cameras other than pro photograhers could be allowed in with a camera. I didn't take mine on this occasion but what a joke, all the little compact cameras were flashing the whole night long and there is even a clip on utube of the event. What is it about these event organisers that don't want you to get a half decent shot of something? We are bombarded by advertising 24/7 about buying top quality gear but nobody really wants to feel threatened by it.

The photographers at the foot of the stage before the concert begins have been given permission to photograph and maybe even paid for the privilage. They don't want big cameras in incase you sell the images on to a mag and they ( the artist) haven't endorsed it. I always sneak my camera in. My husband has the lens in his bag and I have the camera body over my shoulder with a jacket or cardigan covering it. They only search a bag and male attendents can't frisk a woman anyway. If they stop me ( they never do) I would just play on the fact its body only and I cant possibly photograph without a lens - my husband goes to a different entrance or whatever. I've had some pretty great shots but never sold any on so their reasoning is a bit flawed really, I just wanted shots of an event I went to, just to look back on.
