Well, I could reply point-by-point Dagwood but really, as KeithT and Sue Allen immediately recognised, much of it was tongue-in-cheek - particularly the part about the rules. No offence, eh?

Yes, don't think you need lots of rules when chatting about taking a few snapshots

Talking

There are Rules ?

Actually and from the very short time I have been here this seems like a very genuinely friendly place. Threads often take a bit of a wander its the nature of coversation and adds to the general atmosphere and human element of what is basically cyber space..

Conversations in real life usually stray from the original point in question but thats what keeps it interesting..Yes it can be tricky to join in when established members talk about things that happened here or elsewhere before a newcomers arrival but that again reflects life so we go with the flow and that seems to work for me..

You all seem very supportive and informed and though most of the technical terms used mean sweet fanny adams to me at the moment I live in constant hope that I will one day understand what the heck people are talking about..

Very nicely put Bal. Your posts are a welcome addition to this forum.

After reading several pages of this thread I picked up on Abers' quote below and just couldn't resist a little harmless mischief making of my own in my 'old veterans' post. It was even better to get a couple of responses in the same vein (Sue's still makes me chuckle now). We don't want this forum to have all the atmosphere of a tax inspectors' convention do we

None taken, I can't recognise subtlety like I used to. Perhaps it's the new alternative version?

We won't mention of course the threads (this one for example) which should in my view have been posted - if at all - in the 'Off-top discussion' category as this one (Photo Radar) was more intended to post question regarding the site etc.
I see that some people still don't hesitate to offer up their offensive opinion even though the question wasn't asked.

What purpose was satisfied by criticizing the original poster? None, just your need to make snide remarks. You, G.R. and Stan were disruptive on DCM.

On forums such as this there tends to be a divide between those who prefer totally serious discussion and those who are serious where required but believe that there's room for irreverence or flippancy and the opportunity to discuss subjects that might be only partly related to photography or not at all. I've always taken the attitude that if a subject is of no interest then just ignore it- for me that's the technicalities of photoshop, flash units and tripods [none of which I possess ] Others find these totally riveting!

I think the thing is that its horses for courses, if a subjct doesnt appeal or a thread is not to a persons interest then simply pass it by..A little light hearted banter between good natured people wont decrease a forums impact or credibility and for newcomers like myself who have little knowledge it allows us to enter into the spirit of the board when our techincal knowledge is insufficient to comment on some of the more technically advanced threads..

Internet forums are communities of people with a shared interest..naturally some know more than others and for newcomers it can be intimidating, lighter moments allow people such as myself to dip their toes without making a prize lemon of themselves and allows the established and more knowledgeable members to get a measure of who the newcomers are and what they are all about..There's no harm done in the grand scheme of things and whilst I may not comment on the more technical threads you may rely that I read them..half of them I dont have a single clue what they are referring to so I read on hoping that I will grasp the subject and that I will glean something from the discussion whilst keeping my mouth firmly shut and my fingers well away from the keyboard..

Also consider if the newcomers cant comment because all the treads are all so technical you will find that the board diminshes as no one other than a handfull of established and experienced people will ever actually post on a regular basis, newcomers to any board are the life blood it requires..There is always room for a bit of light heartedness it what makes the world go round and a far brighter place..
