That might have something to do with the fact, I was the only moderator at DCM, and I also like the idea of calling a spade a spade.

We now have a combo of sixteen admins and mods.

I noticed that last week. That is a lot of moderators! That sounds oppressive like the man is trying to keep us down

<-- One of sixteen

well - as the earliest anyone could join this incarnation of the forum was was July 2009 that sort of answered the original question in one go. No probs ...better start another thread if anyone wants to chat then...

Nobody is offended and it's a fair question. This site is an upgrade of the old DCM site, so the oldest members on here would stem from there. If you look at the stats at the bottom of the main forum page, then you will see that almost 137,000 people have joined but only about 2,000 are regular users, but this might include people who have joined in the last six months, but haven't posted in a forum.

no-one's offended - it's just that threads often meander and go along a different route...

Do we miss the tension created by rude and/or grumpy old gits? Have we just lost some of the "characters" that we got to know so well? Are they still with us but just frustrated? For sure there are still heaps of peeps willing to answer questions and give advice but it seems to take longer and there just don't seem to be as many. Or is it just me getting past 50? I'd love to know what others think.

I think a lot of forums of all sorts are less active than they used to be - possibly due in part to them being seen as old hat with the rise of 'tweeting' and facebook etc.
This site is a commercial exercise and as such is no doubt successful - lots of information and news to keep those interested in such things coming back and a yearly photo contest designed for huge entries bringing lots of clicks to keep advertisers happy. [surely no-one would run a photo contest in the way the DCMag POTY is structured if they wanted it to be hassle free!].
Without raking up old things again, a lot of people did leave the forums at the time of the change for a number of reasons. Some return occasionally - many don't. What's needed to keep a forum active is subjects designed to provoke controversy or stimulate debate - plenty of healthy argument and discussion that does'nt resort to personal attack.

You can find Chris's flickr pages on http://www.flickr.com/photos/shelfman/

The banter he has with those that comment on his images, and the fun he has 'making' images is worth a look.
