Thanks Andy - I tend to agree. But it's always interesting to see what these exercises throw up.

As for the depth of field - I was careful to move the deer along the same plane, neither forward nor backward in the shot, so depth of filed hasn't changed relative to the deer.

However, again I would agree with you - the proximity of the foreground tree and the branches in the background don't work well with the deer's new position, even though it was a position entirely possible in the real world. Strange.

Yes, cloning out the sapling and the fence in the original pic would work well. In conclusion I feel that the first pic says 'here's a deer in its landscape surroubnding'. The second tighter crop works better as 'a picture of a deer'. The third one doesn't really work.

Thanks to all those that offered an opinion. I find travelling these learning curves very infornative.

Dof is relative to the lens and the transition from leaf fall to front legs just caught my eye. Perhaps it is just as I know it has been moved if you know what I mean.
