I agree with Chris. Why not go into a camera shop first and have a look around, try out a few of the cameras before you take the plunge!

dunno how your strapped for cash but go with john's suggestion try em out in a camera shop, i've a cannon 450,for better shots but i also have a fujifilm finepix s5700, for general pics specailly when im fishing, gets great shots and its only around £80, its has some limited manaul selections like shutter speed and aperture so you can get creative to a degree and a 8mp sensor to. hope this helps John.
