Close-up attachment problem

My DD got a Canon 7D for Christmas, which came with an 18-105mm kit lens. In addition, she got a 50mm f1.8II lens and a 250d 58mm Close up attachment, which is supposed to be compatible with the 50mm, according to this Canon direct page. But the attachment doesn't seem to fit the lens. Any ideas? Do we need some kind of adapter to make it fit?

I suspect that the 58mm refers to the thread size of the close up attachment and, if the Canon 50mm lens is the same as my Nikon 50mm then it has a 52mm thread. If so, you will probably need a stepping ring like this to enable you to attach it to the lens.

you've got the wrong size filter. You should have a 52mm close up lens. I'd see if you can return it & get the correct size, they do a version in 52, 58 & 77mm

Thanks to both of you for responding. I think I'll probably get the step-up ring, as it's inexpensive and she can always use the attachment on larger lenses without the step-up if she wants. Thanks!!
