Question Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-f5.6 IS USM

I recently uprgaded to a Canon 50D with an EF-S 17-85mm f4-f5.6 kit lens included. Although I got a great price on the kit I'm not overly impressed with the results that the lens has produced, quite a lot of distortion at 17mm and fringing on verticals, when compared with my previous Nikon and Olympus kit. I'm thinking of changing it for something a bit better, hopefully!

Should I go for the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM, EF-S 15-85 f3.5-f5.6 IS USM, or would I be better going for the EF 17-40 f4L USM. I'm unlikley to be upgrading to a EOS1 or EOS5 in the near future so the EF-S mount is not a problem. Any recomendations?

Thanks in anticipation.

have a look here .reviews of all possible Canon solutions.

If I had the money then it would be the 17 40 but then it would not overlap my existing lenses too much.

Yer my 17-85mm is the same total rubbish at wide end aslo a lot of barreling (lack of strait edges) but all correctable in Photoshop.
But yer go for some fast glass the 17-55mm f2.8 is tops and 17-40mm is good as it used the sweet spot as Flake would say, as it is ment to be used on a full frame body, but no image stabilizer.
the site matt has given you a link too is very good also take a look at www.cameralabs.com

The Canon EF-S 17-85mm key feature is the image stabilization which works as promised. It provides good all around imaging performance especially in the telephoto region.

Its weakness however is the uninvited green/magenta chromatic deviation appearing at 17mm which is obviously visible with wide-angled shots. The lens exposes a barrel distortion at this range, but you can solve this by using Photoshop Lens Correction adjustment to correct the problem. It is simply an additional step of finishing required.

I have found one site that could see the full review and describing the PROS and CONS. Check out here http://cameralensreviewssecrets.com/
