This may be a silly question, but... when you convert a RAW file in PS Elements, you can see the programme write an xmp file containing the "development" data in the same folder as the original photo. When you use lightroom, where does it store these files? If you copy your original RAW files to another drive, does all this extra data follow as well?

Lightroom does not by default write the sidecar (.xmp) files to the same folder but keeps the changes in its cache if you need them turn it on in preferences

Yes if you use Lightroon to move the files no if you move them outside of Lightroom then you must make sure you include the Sidecar files with the selection.

Many thanks for that - I like the trial version of the software, but I awlays worry when programs don't tell me where they put files, or do things I don't ask! If I can change them in preferences, that's fine!

Yes if you use Lightroon to move the files no if you move them outside of Lightroom then you must make sure you include the Sidecar files with the selection.

This is not strictly true as sidecar files alway follow the main image if moved, be that with windows explorer or any other image managment/browser program.

I would recomend always using XMP sidecar files as opposed to just LR's cache so if you lose LR's database you do not lose all the hard work you did keywording and captioning.

Also if you do any otherXMP aware progam will be able to read captions, keywords and IPTC data that was added in LRand if like me you sometimes prefere to us Capture One for raw processing then all this extra metadata added in LR or any other dam program will stay with the image through the raw processing and automaticly embeded in the finished jpeg or tiff, at least it does with Capture One 4.

As i understand it if you convert to DNG the extra date is embedded in the file, also true that if you set preferences in lightroom you can get the dats as xmp file next to the original where ever you save it

You understand correctly,and anothe advantange of using DNG is if you use a full size embeded preview like I do is that you can update the embeded preview to show the alterations done in LR or Photoshop.

This means that free image veiwers like fastone etc can use the embeded jpeg to see the altered raw image at full size and at lightning speed without the need to render the raw or for you to create a jpeg version of it. Also you can just extract the fullsize embeded jpeg with out the need for a raw converter if you wish.
