Nikon D300s coming down in price / D400 rumor

I was out shopping today and as I was walking past Jesspos decided to pop in to see if any new camera's were in. I spoke to a member of staff and asked a few questions which soon led to why don't you have any D300s in stock.

He explained a job lot of them had been acquired they were awaiting delivery of these, however when I asked about a price and he checked the system he told me, if I ordered online and then collected in store I could get a brand new D300s for £999 !

I asked why this was and he said usually if a model is coming to the end of it's life they can buy the remaining Nikon stock and sell it out at a good price. When asked if the D400 would be replacing this he couldn't answer me but suspected that was the case. Now I wouldn't want to start any more rumors but this is quite interesting and also good if you want a D300s

WEX have the D300s body at £1039, so £999 isn't unbelievably cheap. It's fairly obvious that the D300s is on its way out, just when and to be replaced by what are the questions.

D300s price

It makes me wonder where the pricing is going, with the D300s now below £1,000 while the D7000 remains at £1,100. Isn't the D300s suppposed to be the 'better' camera? Something has to give.

I would imagine once the 7000 has been out a couple of months it will go below that price, the 300 was about £1400 or more when it hit the shelves, having only been out a year though it's come down pretty quick.

The 300s is meant to be more 'pro' and in the respect of it's 51 point focusing matrix and more weather seals it is, but it's older now and the new 7000 has in effect some better points. It's build quality probably isn't up to the 300s though. Swings and roundabouts.

I'd imagine we'll see a 400 out shortly into the new year but who knows ?

If previous experiences are anything to go by there will, indeed, be D300s and D700 replacements launched perhaps around February next year. As with the D300s, its replacement will probably initially hit the shelves at around £1,400. By March I would expect to see the D7000 below £1,000. Is'nt this the game that manufacturer's always play?

I think Nikon perhaps got it a little wrong this time though because the D300s and D7000 have ended up competing with each other for customers' cash. In the meantime, Nikon have nothing filling the £400 price gap between the (presumably) outgoing D90 and the £1,000 reduced D300s. Canon must be rubbing their hands with glee as their EOS 60D is now available for around £830.
