At last I've stumbled how to post pictures, but it's not pretty. I had to upload it to my PR gallery first, rather than from my PC.

I only managed to do that after MUCH faffing. I opened up the bigger picture and opened the 'View Source' then just tried copying and pasting various gobbldygook in between IMG tags.

Surely there's a simpler way...

Ben

Ben

Go to your gallery and get the picture you want to display.

Right-click where the tab is (top right) and select 'Copy Link Location' in Firefox or 'Copy shortcut' in IE.

Then paste the shortcut between the [img][/img] tags.

It does in safari 4 for windows it's just called "copy link"

but yes you do have to upload the pic to the web first as there is no way you can load pictures direct in to a post

Great to see that this type of photography has a spot within the site. It's a genre that has long been a passion and interest for me from the early days with Picture Post and Bert Hardy, continuing with James Ravillious, Phillip Jones Griffiths and two giants Elliot Erwitt and Don McCullin, all well worth a Google. All their pictures tell a story.

Just because a picture is taken on the street doesn't make it "street photography". All too often I try my hand at it and it becomes a miserable failure, just an image of a person or a group of people just being there. No interaction with each other or their surroundings, no story from their demeanour or expression, just people on the street. I think the same can be said for the Documentary side of things, James Ravillious was a master at this.

Have a look at defreesmudge on filickr each of her images of moments caught that tells a story, especially her portfolio on the Appleby Horse Fair.

Another street/documentary photographer that I see regularly in and around London is David Trainer. He doesn't have a web site but his work can be seen at

http://www.londonart.co.uk/sales/vie...?cat=7&alpha=t

I only quote these people because their work epitomises for me what current street/documentary photography is all about. Unfortunately I don't think we will ever see their work here because of the grossly one sided T&C's.

Apologies for not providing workable links, but I can't get the hang of the system here on Photoradar.

Thanks for starting this thread off Ben (nice picture btw) and for those pointers Alan. I also like pictures that tell a story, though I don't take many myself.

I have looked at Ben's excellent website today and also found that Flickr site you mention Alan. Both well worth a look for anyone who is interested in this subject. I will look at the others also.

I found the Flickr contact quite hard to track down so here, for others' benefit, is the url.

Some terrific stuff there Alan. Flickr really does have some good photography, but often it's hidden and hard to find among snapshots. That's why I love forums like this... Shared knowledge!

chris-p, from memory it was on my 70-200mm, probably at the 200mm f/2.8 mark. I took quite a set of shots as the heavens opened and it went from red hot sunshine to torrential rain in a matter of minutes.
