Hey Neil! Yeah the D80 has been a fantastic camera for me. TBH, no real need to upgrade but I would like my DSLR to shoot HD video - something the D80 obviously lacks. The D700 is expected to be replaced by the D800 next year which will also be FX format. Based on the costs of the D700 and the additional requirement to purchase an FX based lens I would need a budget of around £2500. Slightly more difficult these days with the baby.

The more likely option is the D7000 which I think is replacing the D300. It's still DX based, but it does have HD video and there is no need to rush out and replace my glass to get the best from it. The D7000 would also be a nice step up from the D80.

Decisions, decisions. No upgrade till the middle of next year though. I'll wait to see the D800.

Just to remind you that Vat goes to 20% on January 4th 2011. All cameras and lenses will be a bit more costly then.

I don't think the D7000 is replacing the D300. I know the D700 is meant to be replaced by a D800 which would have video. The D300s has video and is a fantastic camera and I think a 400 will be along in about a year or so.

Personally I'm waiting for the D7000 to see what it's like but I don't think it has all the weather seals of the D300 so not quite as pro spec ? It's meant to sit between the 90 and the 300...

I wish Nikon would name their models better, Canon do fine, 1D, 5D, 7D, 60D, 550D & 1000D, it's easy to see a progression there as opposed to D3, D700, D300, D7000, D90, D5000, D3100...

Now I've typed that out it looks more like the D7000 will replace the D90, that would actually make sense in a catalogue as you looked through it and the more 'pro' specs have their own numbering ??? We'll have to see I guess.

I agree, the Nikon model numbering is a bit on the confusing side. Good point on the D7000, while it has the removal of the scene modes, aiming it higher than a D90, it doesn't match the some of the features of the D300. A D400 sounds interesting though!

There are so many scene modes on the D7000 that they won't fit on the dial, so they've been put into a menu. 19 in all, if my counting's right.

I reckon they'll faze the D90 out completely. Then the 'Amatuer' range will all be labeled in thousands and the pro range in single and hundreds... unless they're thinking of using 10's for a mysterious new camera none of us yet know about ??? Still waiting for the 7000 to make it to my local shop so I can have a look at it.
