You can blur backgrounds at all sorts of apertures but it's impossible to say what you need without knowing a specific focal length, camera to subject distance and subject to background distance. In short, it's an unanswerable question really.

It's also difficult to advise on lens choice without knowing which camera you'll have and what your budget will be. Generally, there is nothing wrong with third party lenses. I'd have no concerns about them my self. If you're after a 'normal' lens then Canon have their 50mm f/1.8 and I would suggest the 35mm f/1.8 for te APS-C Nikon (it's more 'normal' that 50mm, but Canon don't do a new one).

Thanks Chris that all makes good sense. I'll let you know what I get when the time comes. I'm still very undecided and I don't think that will change until I've handled the Nikon and seen how it works. My local shop are going to call me when it comes in so I won't know any more myself until then.
