A conversation I had recently with a client (production house for a major advertising agency) and they are finding that scratch disks are making a bigger improvement on performance/speed than extra RAM. And these boys are using Mac Pro's with 8-Core, 12Gb RAM, 2x 2TB drives plus a 2TB drive as a scratch disk. One of the machines they doubled the RAM and saw no difference - adding a bigger scratch disk made a difference...

Could a USB flash drive me allocated as a scratch disk for out and about processing? - he types while reaching for his flash drive

Ian,Andy, thanks for your suggestions. Is a USB memory stick exactly the same as a flash drive in which case I have a couple of 2Gb laying around or do I need to look for something special to do the job? Either way it sounds like it could be a much cheaper option than c£30 for a 2Gb RAm upgrade.

Sorry Dagwood, tried the USB/Flash Drive as a scratch disk and Photoshop wasn't having any of it - only the two regular C: and D: drives showed up as options.

Sorry to build you hopes up

Thirty Quid for two GB is very cheap. I paid £357 for a 16mb, yes MB, memory chip in 1994.
