Hi Speed flash sync on the D5000

Hi all, does anyone know if it's possible to sync a flashgun over 1/200th on the D5000?

I have the Nissin Di866 which supports hi speed sync up to 1/8000th or something ridiculous like that but as soon as I switch on the flashgun, the shutter speed reverts to 1/200th.

No, Auto FP High Speed Sync is not available on the D5000. Why do you want it? If it's to give fill flash in bright ambient light with wide apertures, that's a good reason. If it's to get a faster shutter to stop motion, that's not its purpose, and you're better to reduce the effect of ambient light and use a normal flash sync speed to freeze motion.

On my D90 there is a feature called "auto FP" which allows you to override the sync speed to go above 1/200th sec in certain shooting modes. If memory serves, I don't think the D5000 has this feature and you are stuck at the preset sync speeds.

I can't see me ever needing it to be honest but I was fiddling around with it the other night and couldn't figure out why the shutter speed kept reverting to 1/200th.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I thought this short video might help explain to those who haven't heard about the "auto FP" feature on Nikon Cameras. I only discovered it about two months ago on my D90 lol.

How to activate it differs from model to model and not all Nikons have it.
