Hi Aaron,

Sorry if I gave the impression you were part of the witch hunt - you've remained positive with your messages and replies so apologies if any offence was caused, that certainly wasn't my intention.

And I know what you mean about this could all have been avoided had the rules been applied in the first place. I guess with 114,000 images entered, there has to be a major show of trust from the judges - I wonder how many images were expected to be entered and if this has overwhelmed the resources?

I do feel for Jim though; when in doubt he asked the question of the judges and they gave the green light yet he is the one to suffer from the knee-jerkers...

Here's to POTY 2011

Cheers
Andy

I think you're out of order Andy - the complaints were founded purely on the application of the competition rules, you can think what you like. Aaron has said it all. The Digital photo competition has prizes worth in excess of £20,000 and thousands of entries. How that can be considered a 'minor' competition for all intent and purposes is beyond me. Decision made though and there is no right to appeal on here so we'll just have to swallow hard and accept it I guess.

Russ, and this is typed in a perfectly calm way, it's interesting that I'm suddenly out of order considering some of the comments that have been flying around from others. Complaints were initially about how someone could have more than one entry shortlisted and then more were made about the application (or not) of rules but this quickly moved on to finger pointing and accusations by several people with 'have you seen this' kind of posts slightly reminiscent of 'I'm telling on you' from a playground.

Ok, that may be slightly OTT but, you get my point?! Jim has been singled out, with Bucharon etc, while the 'problem' lies squarely at the feet of the organisers - but we have to consider they have to trust us to a certain extent and can't really be expected to check the validity of 114,000 images.

And perhaps the Digital Photo comp is classed as a minor comp as it's a mag and not The Landscape Photographer Of The Year etc - prize money regardless, it's the perceived stature but again, something for Photoradar and not individuals.

I stand by it, Jim did all the right things and contacted the organisers who gave him a green light - and he's been pilloried for it. There are lots of lessons to be learnt by several people...

Cheers
Andy

PLEASE respect that the below is 50 per cent tongue in cheek and 50 per cent serious... I'll leave it to your discretion to work which from which... the internet sometimes blur's the tone in which a statement is written and trust me, my tongue is firmly in my cheek as I type : )

@ Russ "CSI" Barnes

Why do you feel this issue needs your approval?

I must have missed the meeting when you were made God of Photo Radar?.

Your attitude and petty minded crusade, when real people with a conscience including the staff presiding over any entries would have sorted any erroneous submissions without you playing an ill informed super grass.

All you have succeeded in doing is coming across as a petty minded, vindictive, accusative, judgemental, assumptive and arrogant whiner.

When I submitted my image to Photo Answers I did the same to the Photo Radar POTY never feeling I would place in either competition as Wildlife is and never has been my chosen discipline.

Between placing in a round of Photo Answers, not winning the round nor being put forwards for the Photo Answers POTY and being given a voucher (that took months to arrive!) I found myself much to my surprise being issued a request for a Hi Res from Photo Radar.

I notified Photo Radar hours after receiving the request for a Hi Res image as has be proven here and subsequently have sought (under my own instigation) for the image to be pulled from the short list after discovering that the image had, without my consent or knowledge been reproduced in a magazine.

My discovering it had been printed is what prompted my request for it's removal as knowing that any printed image is not eligible I had previously removed a submitted image from my portfolio of submissions as it had appeared in the 'Hotshots" pages last month.

It's now out of the short list and the competition and I am totally cool with that and wish the remainder of the short list the absolute very best : )

Any one that's chosen to start calling any photographer here a cheat or likewise just blends in to the white noise of on- line trolls as with out any individual knowing ALL the facts pertaining to a situation any accusation remains hollow and un-founded.

To assume that the staff here would not tie any loose ends up regarding selected short list entries prior to the winners being announced and more vitally the fact that there is no pre defined amount or cap of entries for any short list (so in truth absolutely no one has lost out in the selected short list process) is a little naive.

Right, I'm off to do the important thing and go take photos!

Jim
