On my D90 I have a setting for low speed and high speed shooting depicted by the stacked boxes and an L or H. I don't know if it is the same with the D300S but try toggling one further place along the menu.

Otherwise, you memory card may not be quick enough to write the data at 7fps.

1. Drive mode in CH?
2. 14-bit NEF slows things down.

To further what Greenwing has mentioned, active D lighting as well as high ISO ranges above 800 have also been suggested as reasons why the D300s won't shoot at 7FPS.

I've also read that the camera will only shoot 7FPS continuously for about 4 seconds, before the camera buffer becomes full and it slows in order to write the data to the memory card.

Does it not mention in the manual the criterion for shooting at that speed? IE it will only achieve 7FPS when shooting in Jpeg fine, etc?

Hi Snapperwayne,i dont have a d300s but i have a book about one!It says if camera is set to nef files at 14 bit,the max frame rate drops to 2.5 fps, regardless of power source. There are quite a few options of how you set the camera up it seems and they all effect the fps.The frame rate can be set can be set via cs-d5{cl mode shooting speed},quoted frame rates are based on camera being set to continuos servo af,manual or shutter priority mode, and a minimum shutter speed of 1/250second.Do you want the book!I will post it to you if you want,as i was going to get the camera but have decided to wait so its no longer of any use to me.Hope this helps!

Never had that problem with my D300s. High or low rate fps is set using the dial around the qual/wb/iso buttons - you can set the actual fps you get on high or low via the menu. Just tried altering to 14bit and still got fast fps - around 20 shots before the buffer slowed things down - that's using a slow CF card - similar SD card around 18 shots. Setting high D lighting/high ISO noise reduction etc. slows it down to 12 shots before it starts to play catch up but, you still get a fast fps rate.
Out of interest, just tried again in daylight at low ISO and got around 25 frames before it slowed down. comparing the two, I'd say setting D lighting/noise reduction, high ISO etc probably slows the fps rate down a tad from the more normal settings but only by a very small amount.

Active D Lighting and NR both reduce the buffer size, so reducing the length of burst that can be shot at maximum speed before the rate slows due to writing to a card. High ISO also reduces tha buffer, but I think that's because High ISO NR is always on for the highest ISOs, regardless of the menu setting. These don't have a lot of effect on the maximum shooting rate.

14 bit NEF, on the other hand, reduces the maximum rate to 2.5fps. No exceptions.

Ah - the danger of trying things when you're still half asleep - trying out fps in 14bit RAW is a bit pointless if you have the camera set to fine JPEG....
