Is the 7D a replacement for the 50D?

Is it a replacement or a new product line? It would seem to be aimed at Nikon but what effect will it have on other Canon products like the 5D Mk2.

I don't think it'll have any effect when it's currently only £180 cheaper. According to Rob Galbraith it's image quality is similar to the 50D just more pixels. Given that it needs even better lenses to get that resolution, I can't see that it's going to be the success Canon are hoping for. Why would you pay twice as much as the 40D for poorer image quality?

looking over the specs and stuff, it seems to be suited to a different user base than the 5dmkII, with the high fps thanks to dual digic processors, expanded iso range and retaining the 1.6 crop factor making the most out of tele-lenses it seems ideal for sports and wildlife shooters. whether thats actually a factor remains to be seen, it might just be that canon wanted a bridge between their crop/consumer range and their fullframe pro range.

i'll be a little annoyed if it does drive the 5d2 price down as I've just got mine, but i cant see it having a huge effect as the 7D is still a crop sensor camera.

It's a new product line – not a replacement for the 50D.

The pricing is between the 50D and 5D Mark II - and it will have little effect on those that really want a full-frame camera.

However, in terms of action shooting the 7D will have some advantages. In technology terms it is a more advanced camera than the 5D Mark II.

I had a quick play with one this week at the UK launch - and it is beautifully designed. But will want to see the image quality and the autofocus performance in the field before I really fall in love with what seems a very capable camera

I made the upgrade between a 400D and a 50D 3 months ago and have been very satisfied with the step up. Live View has made a vast improvement to my still lifes and landscapes and in general it is a much better camera all round.

Having read the review, there is nothing in the 7D that makes me wish I had waited and certainly nothing in the price difference to justify it for my purposes.

Anyway, the IQ of the 7D is far better than the 50D. Better than the Nikon D300 too. Or at least the ones I have seen upto ISO6400 anyway.

But to answer the OP - no I don't think it replaces the xxD line, but more compliments it as a semi-pro sports/general use camera

In my opinion this new model is to the 1d, that the 5d is to the 1ds line. Its Canon spotting a gap in its product line up using existing technology to make some more money. No harm in it, if you dont like it dont buy it.
