Ink Jet Paper

Hi,
Is there a particular inkjet paper that is 'better' for B&W prints?

I know alot depends upon the printer itself, the number of cartridges etc. but does any paper stand out as being more suitable?

Thanks
Phil

I really don't think so..... but different paper can work differently on each 'style' of shot....
e.g. Matt is good for landscapes, Glossy is almost expected on newspaper/street shots, soft sheen is good with portraits. But even that's just a rough guide.... more important is the 'archivable quality' of papers - which is where you avoid any 'Resin-Coated' paper.
Art papers, like the Rags and Watercolour paper, can be good for, as you'd expect, more arty shots.
If you're really into B&W photography and printing, you may like to pick up the "Black and White Photography" magazine - it goes into all kinds of printable surfaces and, over time, you'll pick up on what works best.

I tried a quick Google search and didn't find much advice. One site looked like it might be useful and discussed a lot of different paper types, though not which style suits which paper.... but you could post your question there.

One thing I discovered was that it's cheap to buy 'sampler packs' of paper and trying different photo styles on them.

Found it! DSLR Photography magazine, May 2010 issue - Mono printing special.

They recommend;

Epson Traditional photo paper

Hahnemule Photo Rag Satin Glossy Fine Art - 'results are stunning and superb'

Innova FibaPrint White Semi-Matte

PermaJet Ultra Pearl 295 - 'ideal for B&W, the colour vibrancy is also superb'.

I've used PermaJet Oyster 271 for colour and it's superb. You can speak to them too and they give good honest advice. I was going to buy a more expensive paper and they recommended the Oyster 271 as I'm going to be framing behind glass. Saved me some cash and gave excellent results. They also offer foc ICC profiles.

As Geoff suggested, try some sampler packs.

Guys,
Thanks for the advice and taking the time to respond, it's much appreciated. I'll check out the website and try some of the sampler packs.
