40D White Balance Issue

Hi All,

Shots taken on my 40D using Auto White Balance are coming out very cold, with a distinct blue cast. They also appear cold using the sunshine white balance even when in direct sunlight.

Any advice? Is there anything I can do to recalibrate the white balance? Has anyone else had the same problem?

Yeah, thats what custom white balances are for. Set it for each shoot and you will always be spot on.

Or, shoot in RAW and fix it later - it's got to be the single easiest thing you can fix on a RAW file and is 100% non-destructive.

The easiest solution would be to shoot in raw .That way you can alter the white balance later to anything you like using canon's own software or photoshop. .Make use of the varying picture styles too from the menu.

I Have a 50 d and invariably shoot raw files .

If you have not tried them the picture styles do make quite a difference.

The other option is to shoot your own neutral grey card under the conditions you are working in and use your own custom white balance .(it's more fiddly and frankly to me a waste of time )the only time I have problems is under artificial light indoors.)

Agreed - but still a minor pain that the camera's not getting it right.

I have to admit that it still surprises me that cameras allow you to select white balance options when shooting RAW, being as it's actually required that a white balance setting be applied at the development stage.
