Question Looking for lightweight folding bag....

Hi folks. This is probably an impossibility, but I'm going on a long (two month) trip soon and have tight constraints. I'm looking for a bag for my Nikon D700 that will function as a reasonably protective day bag, but which will fold away when not in use when I'm flying (because the camera will then go in a large laptop bag that is too big to cart around when sight-seeing).

It may be impossible, because there are conflicting aims: smallness/foldability vs. protection provided: there are plenty of folding day bags but these provide no protection at all - whereas the LowePro bags provide all the protection you need but are too bulky to carry when not in use.

Any ideas?

The padding that provides the protection is what won't fold in most cases. You could try a bag that has removable padded inserts/pockets that you can still keep the individual items in while packing them in the case.

Alternatively something like a series of Lowepro sliplock pouches that you can pack your kit in and stow in your case, then drop them into a day sack to take out with you, or attached to a sliplock belt system or your own belt.

Thank you, ap4a: you're right that the folding is stopped by the padded inserts. One way round this would be to have blow-up inserts that you let down for when the stuff is all packed away, but I don't think any such thing is available. Perhaps I should patent the idea....
