Macro lens for D60

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forums and photoradar so apologies if this is a question that you have answered many times but, can someone recommend a macro lens for the D60 I have about £400 to spend.
Any help is greatly apprciated.

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum

For £400 you've got quite a lot to choose from. A lot will depend on if you have specific requirements regarding focal length...

Overall your options are:

Nikkor 60mm f/2.8 Micro £400
Nikkor 85mm f/3.5 G VR Micro £400
Sigma 50mm f/2.8 Macro £245
Sigma 70mm f/2.8 Macro £390
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro £390
Tamron 60mm f/2 Macro £390
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro £390

There was a review of lenses done a little while ago in Amateur Photographer magazine and the top 3 where (from 1 to 3) Tamron 90mm, Nikkor 60mm, Canon 60mm (irrelevant). The Sigma 105mm also gets very good press and reviews. Both the Tamron 90mm and Sigma 105mm are also nice long focal lengths so, if you're planning macro work of insects and plants etc, you don't have to get so close to them...

Nothing wrong with the lenses suggested by Chris, but you might be want to consider the Nikon 105mm F2.8 VR and Greys of Westminister have one for £549. OK it's a bit more than you wanted to spend but it's worth every penny. I have both the Nikon 60mm F2.8 macro and the 105mm F2.8 VR which I use with either 1.4 converter or2x converter both of which give great results.Converters wont work with the Nikon 60mm F2.8 Macro. VR make a big difference when photographing insects and butterflies in the wild, and although you could used a tripod, by the time you have set-up the subject has gone. Check out other secondhand camera sites as they might have a 105mm F2.8 VR macro for about £400.

I have to agree with Oldboy about the Nikon 105 Vr great lens for the money. I picked one up for £519 from Curry's Digital a couple of months ago
