AutoPlay

Hi everyone.

I have been scratching my head for days over this problem. I have tried everything I know to get AutoPlay to run on Windows 7 pro. My card reader, a Sandisk Image Mate SDDR 189 is being recognised, but I have to copy the files from the reader in My Computer. There is no download time as the files are all there immediately after I plug in my card, but I want to download the CR2 files as DNG files as I once did with XP on my old computer.

I have gone into Autoplay from the control panel and set the default to "ask me every time" and have even added the words net start shellhwdetection to the command prompt.

I'm at my wits end and reached the limit of my sparse computer knowledge so any help would be appreciated.

Regards...Keith

Keith,

not sure I understand you completely, but I guess the first thing you need to do is get windows 7 to recognise CR2 files. Autoplay probably doesn't know what they are so won't run. You will need to install the codec from Canons website to get windows to see them. Note: This won't work with the 64 bit version of windows 7

Again, I'm not sure how you imported the CR2 files as DNG on your old machine, I don't use DNG. I'd guess again you need to use Adobe's DNG converter from the Adobe website. Then run the files through it.

I'm sure someone more familiar with DNG will be along shortly.

You've also got me scratching my head here Keith. How on earth did you manage to download CR2 files as DNG files as you say in your post? I'm sure you'll appreciate that these are two entirely different formats and that the simple act of downloading them to your computer can't actually change the file into a different format.

I'm also somewhat lost over your description of the problems you are experiencing with AutoPlay - Windows 7 or otherwise. Surely AutoPlay is just that - the system will automatically play files that are meant to be played e.g. video and DVD's etc. To the best of my knowledge AutoPlay has got nothing at all to do with uploading raw files (or jpg's for that matter) to your computer.

As to viewing raw file thumbnails on your computer (Mick mentioned it) then I gave you a link for codecs some while back - remember? Those Canon codecs that Mick linked to never appeared to do anything on my computers, either with XP or now W7 whereas the codecs I linked you to did and do. :-)

I think you are confused by Autorun and autoplay. You need to make sure that the DNG converter program is present in the dropdown list for your picture options in Autoplay. Select this as your option and make sure the Autoplay box, at the top is ticked, then when you insert the card it should do what you want.

OK, firstly I'm not confused between autorun and autoplay. My CD's run when I play them as required.

In XP, when I inserted my card into my Sandisk Image Mate, I got the autoplay dialogue box pop up which asked me where I wanted to download the files to. I scrolled down to Photoshop, got up another dialogue box which alowed me to download the CS2 files as DNG files to my alloted folder. Saves a lot of space and no xmp data files running shotgun alongside.

Now with windows 7, even though I have autoplay turned on, I don't get the dialogue box appear so that I can choose where to and how I download my images. Once I have put my card into the reader I have to go to My Computer and see the Image Mate shown as a portable drive with my images waiting for me to transfer to a folder on my external harddrive. I already have the codecs that Forseti gave me the link to, so that Windows 7 can see and show the CS2 files so that isn't a problem. The problem, as I say, is I don't get the autoplay dialogue box show even though it has been enabled to show when any media is plugged in.
