Trannies ????

Hi all,

I have been looking every where to find out what "2 1/4 trannies" means what I do know it has some thing to do with format like 35mm. I have been finding this statement on most ads for mag photographers.

Cheers

I`m guessing it is something to do with smaller versions of the 4x5 transparencies output from a large format camera - but it is a guess

I had to click on this....I was wondering if it was some abstract photos of car transmissions (commonly called trannies in North America) or about transgender persons. Either way something made me look.....

The word "Trannies " covers many things, whether you are into electronics, colour film to mention a couple.

This makes me feel really old.

2 1/4" square trannies are slide film transparences, usually colour, taken on 120 or 220 roll film. Taken with a medium format camera, usually referred to as 6x6 cms. The next step up from 35mm film transparencies.

I've got a bundle up in the loft somewhere.

Call yourselves photographers!!! Do you remember film??? ;-)

Hooray! At least somebody remembers 6x6cm transparency film! Well done, Abers! It's still available - top quality Velvia and Kodak Ektachrome among them. I only had a brief relationship with a medium format camera.... but I'm seriously on the lookout for one at a reasonable price, something like a Bronica maybe.

thank you Abers, that has really help me, I was beginning to think it was a word that nobody knows any thing about. OO I do remember film, believe it or not I still have a 35mm canon slr camera with 3 lens sitting here. I use this camera every now and then, I still think the old film camera takes much better pictures.

Any way thanks to every body who tryed to answer it for me. Your help was great as all ways.

Cheers all

Hm! Now I really feel old... Before anyone else suggests it, it has nothing to do with one's gender - in this case, but positive film such as Kodachrome in tranparency format in cardboard frames for putting in a slide projector. One could put these between glass in a plastic frame for a more permanent means of keeping them safe from dust and scratches. I have several sets - still of these trannies, and a table-top projector in which to view them. Most of this market dropped out when Kodak decided to get rid of their Kodackrome film stock altogether, and I believe that Ectachrome is going the same way as is other positive film by other film manufacturers such as Ilford, Fuji, Sony and Agfa. northumbrian1
