Anyone Else?

What prompted me to post here was an email from National Geographic regarding one of my images for their reader stock photography!
Although I personally think that this image is one of my best wildlife captures I am unsure whether stock photography is the way to go.
I have allways seen this one, with a little more work, being a framed piece, however I guess like many of us here it is hard to find the know how and a market for our work.
Love to hear some comments or experience!
Brett

Hi Brett,

There are so many stock images available that the chances of earning big dollars that way is very limited unless you strike a lucky pot, where your image proves invaluable to a particular client and they pay for exclusive use. These days, I think you have to become a recognised name, and that is a long haul of constant self promotion and some good luck along the way; remembering that stock libraries will not generally promote one particular image above another and you only receive a small cut in royalties.

Setting up websites to market yourself seems to be the most sensible route and perhaps incorporatng links to the stock libraries you are with can add extra clout to the overall marketing plan.

We are all in the same boat, so to speak, where the market place is swamped with excellent images and you just have to pray and work for that break to get you there.

Thanks Andy for the great advice. Been looking at a few options since I posted but one area that appears to be a problem is taxation subject to the country!
Will keep searching!

There is a specialist wildlife stock agency called NHPA which I know don't sell their pictures cheaply so it might be worth punting your stuff at them.
